Hello everyone!

Just wanted to send one final reminder for tonight's Bible Study Potluck! It will be at my (Robin's) house at 67 Southview Terrace at 6:30. Take this opportunity to take a break from studying and celebrate the end of this week while fellowshiping with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Grab a bag of chips or bring a couple of cans of green beans to warm up on the stove and join us for an hour of fun.

I know you already received an email about our Potluck this Friday, but I just wanted to remind you. Also, I know we asked you to reply to all and let us know what you are bringing but unfortunately you cannot reply to all to a listserve. You can either email one of the leaders with what you are brining or just bring something yummy to eat. It doesn't really matter what people bring, if everyone brings desserts, we will be eating desserts for dinner....not the end of the world :) Hope to see many of you there. Bible Study Pot Luck changed to Friday

Hello everyone,

So the plan so far has been to have a pot luck this week in place of our normal bible study, however, the second years have a panel/dinner going on that night at 6 that pertains to information about third year that will be helpful to us. Most of us are going to be there. It totally slipped our minds. So, if it okay with you all, we would like to have it Friday night at 6:30 at Robin's house ( 67 Southview Terrace, off of Elmwood between South and Mt. Hope). We hope that everyone can come out. You can stay as long as you want (aka you don't have to stay long if you don't want to).

Please let us know if this new time will conflict with any other plans. Also don't forget to email what food you will be bringing (it can be anything). Thank you so much.

PS I'm baking macroni and cheese.

Bible Study!

Hey Everyone!
     Bible study tomorrow (Weds) will be at Mary and Jen's house 128 Irvington Street at 7pm. This is our last week of Corinthians. Hope all can make it :)
     Also just wanted to give you a heads up about the future. We are planning a pot luck next week so we can have some time for fellowship before Spring break. Also, our third years are going to be pretty busy after spring break so it is also a chance for us to hang out with them. We probably will not have bible study the week before spring break due to first and second year tests. We will then start up again after spring break. Also we just wanted to mention that we are starting to look for a few first years who might be interested in leading bible study next year. Let us know if you want to be a leader.

Hello all!

Sorry for the last minute E-mail, but we had a couple last minute changes. The plan is for Bible Study to be at Robin and Melissa's house on Southview Terrace. We know that it is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent, and some churches have services tomorrow. However, since not everyone has a service to attend, we leaders decided to go ahead with Bible Study. If you have a service at your home church and would rather attend that, we understand. If it ends early enough and you want to stop by, that would be great too! Either way, we will be doing the second half of the Corinthians chapter we started yesterday.

Missions Breakfast, Haiti update 1/23

LAST CALL! Please sign up now for our Winter Missions Breakfast coming up this Saturday, January 23rd, from 9-11 am at the Rochester Academy of Medicine, 1441 East Ave. We have an array of local speakers, including Drs. Christine Birnie, Norm Wetterau, and Larry Gage who will be talking about their missions experiences and associated opportunities in India, Africa, and Nicaragua.

In addition, we'll be bringing an update about Haiti and ways that you can support the relief efforts that are going on there. At least 3 MCCF members have been actively involved, including Jeff Harp (who may be with us to share), John Seaman (who will be on his way to Haiti -- see Note below), and Alexi Matousek (who is with Dr. Farmer and group out of Boston). Let us know if you have additional contact information to share. More on Saturday!

John Seaman is leaving at the end of the week to go to Haiti with a second team and has given us the following prayer requests:

Need for networking / coordination in the midst of chaos and confusion
Safety & security – not just with people rioting, etc, but also with transport, etc. We’ll be working with Helimission using helicopters to access more remote areas.
Emotional & spiritual needs of our team members / other workers facing the tremendous needs / loss
Spiritual covering – I’m sure the spiritual darkness of Haiti will be reacting. Who knows, this might deal a significant blow to the Voodoo spiritual empire?

Conscientious objection and opting out of sessions

Hey guys,

I just wanted to remind you guys that the school has in a place a policy for opting out of educational experiences that a student finds objectionable. I was less than thrilled about the way the human sexuality lectures and small groups were run and I just wanted to pass along an email discussion with Dr. Markakis as I am opting out of some future ACE sessions. So bottom line, it is your education, and it should be handled in a way you feel is appropriate. If you are uncomfortable with material, you have the right in our student handbook to learn it in a way that is consistent with your beliefs and faith.

Regarding the upcoming conferences I see your request to opt out, ie not attend, and that is noted (and accepted). As you may be aware, the School has a Policy in place, regarding 'opting out for conscientious objection' (I've cut and pasted a portion of it below; the full policy is in the Handbook). With regard to this conference and the content, as you note, you will be held responsible for the material, understanding the options, risks and benefits. Please note, there is some content about Emergency procedures, and you are responsible for knowing that material; as well, if you are unable to provide a patient's request, you should know how/where to refer a patient for the services they seek.

I do recommend you meet with your Advisory Dean to discuss accommodations in Years 3 and 4. As below, students cannot opt out of participating in educational experiences that involve emergency health care.

Effective March 11, 2009, the SMD has a new policy that allows students to opt out of specific (non emergency) educational experiences due to conscientious objection. If a student's conscientious objection and anticipated absence or non participation in educational experiences, substantially alters the depth and integrity of the educational requirements for University of Rochester medical students, a review committee will determine the reasonableness of the anticipated non participation. The student may appeal an adverse review committee decision to the MSPRB, whose decision will be final.

A student who complies with the required notification and approval process, can not be required by faculty, residents, the hospital or a member of its medical staff to participate in any (non emergency) health care or research activity related to the conscientious objections.

Please note, students with approved requests can not opt out of participating in educational experiences that involve emergency health care. Because students with must participate in the care of patients during emergency situations, they will not be exempted for being evaluated on the educational content and must demonstrate (via means other than the actual procedures of the area of objection) the expected level of competence. The URSMD is not responsible for providing tutoring and/or academic support to assist a student with meeting the academic standards.

Bible Study, RSVP for Dinner

As we discussed last week, this week's Bible Study is a dinner held at with our advisers, Dr. Bill and Susan Morehouse. The dinner will be at their house and we will be joined by a few other doctor couples in the area. We have a main dish, a side, a salad, and a dessert, and Mrs. Morehouse said we could maybe bring bread and maybe another side and dessert. Mrs. Morehouse needs to know how many people to plan for, so please RSVP to me as SOON as possible, so I can give her a count by Tuesday morning.

* Hank is the Medical Director of Churchville-Chili Family Medicine. He did his undergraduate work as an English major at Columbia University and attended medical school at the University of Rochester where he received a Reader's Digest international fellowship to do medical work in Zambia, Africa during his last year. After graduation he did an additional year of post doctorate training in Orthopedic Surgery before completing his residency in Family Medicine. He recently received a Master of Arts in Theology from Northeastern Seminary and serves as Pastor of Faith Community Church in LeRoy. Hank has been married for over twenty years and has four children.

Just wanted to remind for tomorrow night and to let you know about something we are doing. I'm guessing you all have been getting E-mails about the upcoming Homeless Outreach Fair that some of our classmates are putting together. Our Christian Fellowship was specifically asked to participate in this outreach, and since part of our calling is to contribute to needy, we were thinking of doing a mini-offering-like thing at tomorrow's meeting. If you are interested in giving to this cause, please bring your spare change or a couple of dollars to contribute. All the money will be put to buying the supplies needed to give out in hygiene baggies to homeless people in Rochester.
